Elevating Dialogue on Disability Inclusion
During the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Nyamasheke, AWF collaborated with UNFPA to host an event aimed at amplifying the voices of people with disabilities. Aligning with the global theme—promoting leadership, participation, and inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post COVID-19 recovery—the event brought together community leaders, persons with disabilities, and service providers. This inclusive dialogue served to reaffirm commitments to dignity, rights, and well-being for all, while reinforcing the message that no one must be left behind. (undp.org, rwanda.unfpa.org) -
Focused on Health and Reproductive Rights
A significant portion of the day centered on empowering youth and women with disabilities through education on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Through community meetings and targeted support, including distribution of menstrual health products, the initiative tackled barriers that often prevent persons with disabilities—particularly girls and women—from accessing essential health services. This approach underscores that promoting health equity is fundamental to ensuring full participation in society. (rwanda.unfpa.org, rwanda.unfpa.org) -
Building Capacity and Community Awareness
AWF and UNFPA facilitated workshops and community outreach sessions to enhance understanding and capacity among local leaders, parents, and caregivers. These interactive platforms underscored the responsibilities shared by families and communities to support equitable inclusion. Testimonials from leaders of disability associations highlighted the impact: seeing educated, empowered women with disabilities inspired broader belief in their potential and contribution to community development. -
Strengthening Sustainable Networks and Support Systems
Far beyond a single-day event, the collaboration signaled a long-term commitment. It connected disability associations, health providers, and local authorities under a shared agenda of inclusive development. By integrating SRHR, advocacy, and rights awareness into ongoing projects like the “Healthy & Empowered Youth Project,” AWF and UNFPA helped lay the groundwork for sustained progress. These strategic partnerships ensure that the communities in Nyamasheke have both the tools and systemic support needed to continue advancing disability inclusion. (esaro.unfpa.org, answer-project.eu)
By combining inclusive dialogue, targeted health interventions, community capacity-building, and durable partnerships, AWF and UNFPA’s engagement in Nyamasheke reinforces the principle that disability inclusion must be integrated in every aspect of development—from health to leadership and beyond.
